Invisalign – How Does It Work?
Find out how Invisalign can work for you by learning more about each step of the treatment process:
Step 1: Your Consultation
Start your journey to straight teeth by coming in for a consultation. We’ll let you know whether you’re a suitable candidate for treatment and how long it is likely to take.
Step 2: Treatment Records
We’ll start by checking your teeth and gums are healthy. Then we’ll take photos of your teeth and face and some x-rays. Finally special moulds or impressions of your teeth will be taken and all the data will be combined to get your aligners made.
Step 3: The ClinCheck
We then design your treatment using special 3D ClinCheck software to show you how your teeth will move over the course of your treatment.
Step 4: Fitting Your Aligners
At your next appointment we will fit your aligners. For most treatments you will also need small tooth coloured attachments placing on your teeth to help move your teeth into the correct position.
Step 5: Changing Aligners
Over the course of your treatment you will change your aligners for a new set every week and check in with us for adjustments approximately every month. Most treatments last between 6 months and 1 year in total.
Step 6: Smile!
Show off your new smile with pride. When you reach the end of your treatment we will provide you with retainers to help prevent your teeth from moving out of position again and help you to maintain straight teeth for life.
Will Invisalign Work for Me?
Invisalign can be used to treat a wide variety of cases but works best for mild to moderate problems. Some of the issues that can be treated include:
Gaps between teeth can naturally due to abnormal tooth sizes and jaw growth. Missing teeth can also cause the surrounding teeth to shift due to the extra space, creating gaps in your teeth. Missing teeth and gum disease can cause teeth to move and spaces to form.
Teeth crowding occurs when there is not enough space in your mouth to fit in all of your teeth. Many people have crowding do some degree and it usually gets worse with age. Overly crooked teeth can get increasingly crowded unless treated.
An over bite can typically form as a result of incorrect growth of the jaw bones, genetics and missing teeth. An uncorrected over bite can create an appearance of a gummy smile and even lead to problems with tooth wear, jaw discomfort and gum irritation.
An under bite can occur when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. This can be caused when the upper jaw doesn’t grow enough to meet the lower jaw or when the lower jaw grows too far past the upper jaw or a combination of the two. Missing teeth can also be a factor. This can create an appearance of a prominent chin, prevent the normal function of your teeth and create problems with tooth wear and jaw discomfort.
Open bite often occurs when upper and lower teeth do not meet properly. Genetic factors may predispose to open bites however they are often a result bad habits such as sucking a thumb or dummy or mouth breathing. Uncorrected open bites can lead to breathing issues, speech problems and jaw discomfort.
Cross bites can occur when the upper and lower jaws are not aligned properly. One or more upper teeth bite on the inside of the lower teeth. This can lead to a poor appearance of the teeth, jaw discomfort and problems with the bite.
Wearing Invisalign Braces
Tooth overcrowding and misalignment can deflate your self-confidence. Wearing Invisalign teeth braces can gradually correct the problem without attracting attention. Whilst not totally invisible, they are one of the most discreet teeth straightening options currently available.

This makes them barely noticeable to friends and work colleagues.
The other big advantage is the ability to remove the aligners them whenever you need to. Your dentist will advise you to wear your aligners for about 22 hours each day. London Invisalign FAQ
1. What are the advantages of Invisalign?
The main advantage of Invisalign over traditional braces is that they are almost invisible. Many people find that this reduces the stigma and loss of confidence associated with visible brackets and wires. The other big plus with Invisalign is easy removal. As long as you wear your Invisalign trays for about 22 hours each day, you can easily remove them yourself for a meal, brushing, or a social engagement.
2. What’s the typical Invisalign cost in London?
Our treatments start at £1,500 for very mild cases. The price does increase depending on the complexity of the case.
3. How often will I visit my dentist during treatment?
Invisalign braces are custom-made to gradually align teeth over a number of months. Though shorter treatment plans may be suitable for minor problems, most treatments last between six and twelve months. With traditional braces, you need to visit your dentist regularly for brace adjustment. The great thing about Invisalign is that you can easily fit and change the braces yourself, through the course of your treatment plan. During your Invisalign treatment, your dentist only needs to monitor your progress. This means that you have fewer visits to the clinic, and each of your visits is often just a short, routine check-up.
4. Is Invisalign painful?
Each one of us has a different pain threshold, so Invisalign is reported as being uncomfortable by some and not at all by others. Luckily, most Invisalign brace wearers agree that the discomfort is only felt for a day or two when they fit a new aligner from their personalised treatment pack. A feeling of pressure after fitting a new aligner is perfectly normal. It’s a sign that your misaligned teeth are on the move towards their intended positions in your stunning new smile!
5. Do I need a dental retainer after treatment?
‘Yes’ is the simple answer to this. A dental retainer is need to ensure that newly aligned teeth stay in their intended locations. The dental retainer gives the bone surrounding each tooth root time to adapt to the changed position. At this stage of your treatment it’s vital that you follow your dentist’s advice about wearing a retainer.
6. How do you clean Invisalign clear braces?
A daily clean is essential for your aligners. This will ensure that your braces stay fresh and avoid a build-up of harmful bacteria. A soft toothbrush is handy for a deep-clean, right down into your aligners’ tooth sockets. Soap and warm water is OK for a quick freshen-up, but it can lead to the formation of plaque. Most toothpastes can be a bit too abrasive for transparent aligners. Here in the UK there’s a professional product available for cleaning Invisalign clear braces and dental retainers. ‘Retainer Brite’ is a 15 minute soak treatment that comes in tablet form. It gets rid of all the nasties without harming your aligners. You can buy Retainer Brite in most local London pharmacies.
