But don’t worry, there are a whole host of cleaning solutions and products, which will allow you to stay on top of the cleanliness of your teeth during your orthodontic treatment.
We’ve created a list of some of the best products available which can help you to clean your braces effectively.
Use an Electric Toothbrush for Easy Dental Hygiene
It’s highly likely that if you own an electric toothbrush, you will never want to go back to using a manual toothbrush again!
And, when it comes to cleaning around your braces, electric toothbrushes are super effective dental hygiene tools, especially in terms of tackling a build up of plaque around your brackets.
Oral-b and Philips Sonicare offer some of the best brushes and are brilliant for cleaning your braces. The majority of Oral-b electric toothbrush’s even come complete with a specialist orthodontic head. You should always brush for at least 3 minutes, twice a day!
Save your Manual Toothbrush as a Back-up
You can always use a manual toothbrush to clean your braces but you may find maintaining good dental hygiene more difficult that with an electric one, so it is recommended as a backup.
You should always ensure that you brush below and above the bracket, ensuring that you remove all of the plaque. It’s also important that you clean the tongue side service of your mouth, the biting services of your teeth and your tongue – this is what gives you good breath.
It’s so important to develop good brushing habits, if you stand any chances of maintaining a happy and healthy mouth whilst wearing your braces.
Use Tepe Brushes to maintain Dental Hygiene between your Teeth
Another effective way to maintain good dental hygiene is by using a Tepe brush. This type of brush is ideal for tackling hard to reach areas in-between your brackets and under the wire.
And their compact design makes them great for carrying around with you on the move. So, you really should never have an excuse not to keep your braces clean and happy! Two of the best products that you can buy are the Tepe Interspace and Tepe Compact Tuft – their angled and compact design make them great for optimising the cleaning process and removing food which is tangled in your brace.
Flossing also works
In order to keep your gums healthy, it’s also important to floss when you have braces, especially when it comes to successfully removing any food that is lodged or stuck in-between your brackets.
A good technique is to go under the wire, in between the teeth, and then make a letter C around your tooth and go up towards your gums – plaque is notorious for accumulating in this area. You will need to repeat these steps twice a day if you can.
