Maintaining good dental hygiene through regular brushing and flossing are essential when it comes to keeping teeth healthy by neutralizing sugar and food particles that form plaque. Plaque produces acid that damages tooth enamel, leading to further problems such as cavities, and can even cause periodontal gum disease. In a world where many foods are branded detrimental to your dental hygiene, there is more and more scientific research being developed in support of the benefits that certain foods have in relation to the health of your teeth and mouth. When it comes to tea, there are certain compounds called polyphenols that are found within black and green teas. These compounds have been scientifically proven to slow the growth of bacteria associated with cavities and gum disease. Researchers at the University of Chicago, Illinois, concluded that subjects who rinsed their mouth with black tea for one minute up to ten times a day, had better dental hygiene with a significant decrease in plaque build-up in comparison to those that rinsed using regular water.
Despite many claims that cheese doesn’t offer health benefits, research published in the general dentistry journal reported that 12-15 year olds who consumed cheddar had considerably lower acid levels in their mouth as opposed to subjects who ate sugar-free yoghurts or drank a regular glass of milk. After consuming these foods, they rinsed their mouths with water, and the acid or PH levels in their mouth were recorded every 10, 20 and 30 minutes following the rinsing. Those who consumed milk and yoghurt showed no change in their PH levels, yet those that consumed cheddar had a dramatic decrease in acidity at each measured interval.
Due to their natural sweetness, raisins don’t contain sucrose, or table sugar as it is most commonly known. Sugar aids bacteria in sticking to the surface of the tooth, leading to an increase in plaque production. Raisins are also a source of phytochemicals, which may eliminate cavity causing plaque bacteria.
It takes a lot of effort and a serous amount of chewing in order to break down foods such as raw vegetables, carrots and cucumbers in particular. Chewing for prolonged periods of time may disturb the formation of dental plaque, and serves as a cleansing mechanism against the production of bacteria.

Foods high in calcium such as cheese, almonds, leafy greens and foods rich in phosphorous such as meat, eggs and fish can help protect tooth enamel. Calcium and phosphate work to redeposit minerals back into those lesions, with calcium also being crucial to the overall health and strength of your bones, including your jaw.
Despite the health benefits that these foods possess, it is important to remember that over consuming in almost anything can lead to negative health effects in some way, and that moderation is the key to achieving not just a healthier body, but a healthier mouth too.
