Orthodontic treatment is becoming increasingly common, and is being popularised even more by celebrities. When it comes to selecting braces, there are many different brands available which can quite often lead to confusion when it comes to choosing which ones are best for you. During the orthodontic procedure, it is the dentists responsibility to assess the final outcome and tailor the treatment to best achieve these ambitions, regardless of brand or price. So before you get caught up on a specific brand or variant that you like, it’s important to think about the types of braces that are available.
There are 4 main types of braces:
Traditional metal braces
These are usually the first thing that patients think of when looking at orthodontic treatment. With a durable and resilient metal which prevents frame deformity, a relatively low price tag and adjustment appointments being easier and more frequently available for booking, many opt for traditional metal braces. Bear in mind however, especially if you are self conscious about treatment as an adult, this treatment is the most notable, and therefore not the ideal solution for those struggling with appearance issues.
Ceramic brackets come in either white or, more commonly, high translucency. This makes the treatment almost invisible and therefore a much preferred option to the traditional metal variant. Despite this discreet design, there is still a high chance that metal wire will still need to be attached to the brace. However, this increase in discretion also comes at a price with Ceramic braces costing considerably more than metal one. They also carry a high risk of staining due to dietary choices and for red wine lovers, for example, these may not be a good choice.
This is an area of orthodontics where the brand plays a significant role. While the dental market has an abundance of clear aligners readily available, Invisalign aligners use advanced technology discovered through meticulous research, and significant investment in using only the very best materials. It is due to this well documented and highly funded research that Invisalign is the leading name in clear alignment orthodontics. Treatment is planned using specialist software that will demonstrate how your teeth will move, and is a preferred option by many in need of minor correctional procedures. With the bonus of being near invisible, this choice of treatment is favoured among those who are self conscious or have jobs which involves face to face interaction. However, given their increased price, high cost of replacement, potentially longer treatment and requirement of wearing them up to 22 hours a day, this course of treatment is not suited to all cases.
With lingual braces, the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of the teeth. With its lack of visibility, lingual treatment is preferred by patients wishing to be discreet about their orthodontic treatment. However, with an increase in cleaning difficulty and increased cost, this choice of orthodontics treatment is not for everyone.
